Littering is one of our pet peeves.

And in the Philippines, as with many places in the world, cigarette butts are the most “popular” thing for people to litter, so much so that it is the single most collected item in international coastal cleanups. This spurred one of our writers and Chief Collaborator Jen Horn to write this blog post in February 2013 entitled: #CutTheCrap #NoMoreButts: The Big Impact of Little Butts.

Discarded cigarette butts are typically carried by wind and rain as runoff from streets to drains, to rivers, and ultimately to the ocean and its beaches. [1] The annual Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) reports that “cigarette butts have been the single most recovered item since collections began”. [2]

Furthermore, cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who mistake them for food. And being composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic, cigarette butts can last as long as other forms of plastic, and therefore not be digested by these animals. [3]

This post later led to a collaboration with 7 amazing Filipino graphic designers, Manix AbreraReg SilvaOJ DesuasidoRob ChamJP CuisonCelina de Guzman, and Apol Sta. Maria, who used their creative genius to help us spread the word online through this Facebook campaign, where we also encouraged the use of upcycled film canisters (funkified by our awesome artist friends, no less!) to serve as temporary cigarette butt bins when a trash can is out of sight.

We also figured, what better place to reach smokers than at a gig, right? So we rounded up some of our musician friends (PedicabCiudadSlow HelloYour Imaginary Friends – now known as We Are Imaginary, RomCom and No Rome) who believed strongly in this campaign too, put them together with our awesome artist collaborators in a video, thanks to the talents of the amazing folks at Red House Productions, and here’s what we got:

The eyegasmic campaign culminated with a kickass gig climax at Route 196, which had an amazing turnout despite being scheduled at the same time as the popular Fete de la Musique Festival, so we were elated with all the support and warm fuzzy feelings and love we received.

People care. It’s just about finding what makes them tick. And helping them find how to channel good by giving them an avenue to do what they love, while championing a cause they believe in, which in this case, is the unmindful littering of cigarette butts.
